Canadian Armed Forces Medical Cannabis Coverage: What You Need to Know

Canadian Armed Forces members have access to medical cannabis reimbursement through the CAF health benefits system, administered through Medavie Blue Cross. Flora Initiative is registered with Medavie Blue Cross and can direct bill on your behalf.

Coverage for active CAF members is tied to the CAF drug benefit plan. Veterans who have released from service and transitioned to Veterans Affairs Canada are covered under VAC’s Cannabis for Medical Purposes program — if that’s you, see our dedicated VAC coverage guide.

For active members, the most common path to direct billing runs through your CAF medical chain. Your military medical officer or a civilian practitioner can provide a medical authorization. If you do not have access to a practitioner willing to authorize cannabis, Flora’s clinical team conducts virtual assessments across Canada at no cost to you — authorization typically within 3 to 5 business days.

What Flora handles: clinical assessment, medical document registration, Medavie Blue Cross direct billing, and ongoing supply. One point of contact from authorization through delivery.

If you are transitioning from CAF to VAC: the transition period is a common point where coverage lapses or changes. Flora can assess and register you under whichever program applies at the time of your application, and update your file when your VAC coverage is confirmed.
