How to Transfer Your Licensed Cannabis Seller in Canada (2026)
Switching your medical cannabis registration from one Health Canada licensed seller to another does not require a new medical document, a waiting period, or contact with Veterans Affairs Canada or Medavie Blue Cross. Your existing authorization transfers. This guide explains how.
Why Veterans Are Switching in 2026
The federal government reduced the VAC cannabis reimbursement rate from $8.50 to $6.00 per gram effective 2026. Veterans registered with licensed sellers pricing above $6.00/g now have an out-of-pocket gap that did not exist before.
At 3 grams per day — the standard maximum — a seller charging $8.50/g costs approximately $225 per month out of pocket under the new rate. A seller priced at $6.00/g costs nothing.
Transferring to a seller at the $6.00 rate eliminates this gap entirely. The process takes less time than it takes to place a regular order.

The Transfer Process
Step 1: Register with your new licensed seller Contact the seller you’re moving to and submit your medical document and ID. Most sellers have an online registration form that takes under 10 minutes.
Step 2: Your new seller initiates the transfer Your new seller contacts your current seller and requests the medical document transfer. You do not need to call your current seller or notify them directly.
Step 3: Confirmation and first shipment Once the transfer is confirmed, your account is active with the new seller and your first order ships. For VAC patients, direct billing with the new seller begins at this point — no action is required with Medavie Blue Cross.
Most transfers complete within 5–7 business days of submitting complete documentation.
For VAC, RCMP, and CAF Patients
Direct billing transfers automatically when your medical document moves to the new seller. You do not contact Medavie Blue Cross to update your billing — the new seller handles this as part of the registration process.
There is no gap in coverage during the transfer if you time it correctly. Inform your new seller of your current supply level so they can coordinate your first shipment to arrive before your existing supply runs out.
Will There Be a Gap in Supply?
Only if the transfer takes longer than expected and you don’t plan for it. To avoid a gap:
- Initiate the transfer before your current supply runs out — don’t wait until you’re on your last week
- Ask your new seller what their average transfer completion time is
- Some sellers ship your first order while the transfer processes to prevent interruption
What Your Current Seller Can and Cannot Do
Licensed sellers cannot prevent a transfer or share your medical information without your consent.
They can decline new registrations for operational reasons, and they retain your order history on their own system. You can request a copy of your records from your current seller under federal privacy law if needed.

If Your Medical Document Expires Soon
You can transfer with a valid document, but plan the timing carefully. If your document expires mid-transfer, coverage lapses until a renewed document is on file with your new seller. If your document expires within 60 days, consider scheduling a renewal consultation before or alongside your transfer.
Common Questions
Do I need to notify my doctor? Not required by regulation, but your healthcare practitioner should know which seller holds your authorization for continuity of care.
Can my current seller refuse the transfer? Sellers can decline new registrations for legitimate operational reasons but cannot block a transfer of your existing registration.
What if I want my order history? Your order history stays with your current seller. Request your records before leaving if you want them, using your rights under the Privacy Act.
Does transferring affect my authorized daily quantity? No. Your daily gram authorization is set by your healthcare practitioner and transfers unchanged.
